The Czechoslovakian Gotwald Shipyard at Komarno according to a CIA report dated 6 October 1953

An item reported that the Czechoslovakian Gotwald Shipyard at Komarno, Czechoslovakia [nowadays Slovakia] was started as a government yard in 1948 but already in 1949 taken over by the Soviet Union and since then operated. Though not completed was in 1948 started with newbuilding of ships; repairs were not done. There was no link with the Skoda owned Gottwald Works or with the already existing yard. The former Skoda Works produced the needed engines. The personnel numbered 800 labourers partly working in night shifts. Since the Soviet management started were just the two passenger ships Russia and Ukraine with 1.600hp four stroke engines built and next towed towards Ismail and furthermore 4 tugs for Russia. All six vessels left the yard by end 1952, nothing more was realized of the building program including 14 vessels. To allow the building of larger ships was between October-November 1952 the bridge between the island and the old centre of Kormano raised with another 7 metres. To built an iron foundry were houses in the shipyard area built and condemned to obtain the necessary space and foundations under construction.
