1. Maximiliaan Frederik Gunning (9 October 1895 Zwolle, Netherlands-13 February 1972 Petersfield, England). Until 1926 naval engineer when he was appointed as head of the naval shipbuilding branch of the shipyard Kon.Mij. De Schelde at Vlissingen, Netherlands. In 1935 appointed as director of the N.V. Verenigde Scheepsbouw-bureaux (NEVESBU), The Hague, Netherlands. The 3-cylinder submarine design was based on a German idea for a cargo submarine. Between 1904-1945 again in service of the Royal Netherlands Navy. After the Second World War were several designs drawn dealing with the 3-cylinder design despite the interest of the Royal Netherlands Navy of developing the pre-war design.
