American whaling bark Elizabeth visited Payta, Peru according to the newspaper The Inquirer and Mirror dated Wednesday 1 January 1834

An item referred to a letter from Charles Higginson dated Payta [Peru] 15 September 1833 reported the visit at Payta on 22 August of the American whaling bark Elizabeth master San[d]ford of New Bedford 14 months out 300 barrels oil. Her master reported that when he visited S lango (1) for water and wood on 9 September 15 crewm embers mutinied refusing duty until the mate Abraham M. Gifford was discharged. Gifford went over on the Phenix of Nantucket. Boat steerer Winthrop Whitman was discharged for threatening the officers. On 14 September was again Payta visited to engage without success a new mate while second mate Benjamin Gibbs who became sick on the day they left Payta died 6 days later. Had taken 11 barrels oil.
