British naval force entering harbour of Diego Suarez, Madagascar according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee Daily summary dated 11 May 1942

An item reported that the Vichy military governor of Diego Suarez [harbourtown, since 1975 called Antsiranana, Madagascar) and his civil administrators sigened the terms of surrender on the 8th. (1) The major part of the British naval ships and transports entered the harbour. At Port Nehore were a German and two Italian ships scuttled.

Note

1. Diego-Suarez was on 5 May 1942 the start point for the Allied forces capturing Madagascar preventing Japan taking over the island to be used for attacking allied shipping. This was Operation Ironclad. Japanese midget submarines attacked as answer the harbour damaging the British battleship HMS Ramillies and sinking the tanker British Loyalty. The whole island was captured between 5 May-6 November 1942 and. Among the Allied forces were also the Royal Netherlands and Polish navies.
