Movements of Japanese submarines in Indian Ocean increasing according to the U.S. Joint Intelligence Committee. Daily summary dated 19 March 1942

An item reported that after a lull the Japanese submarines were again active in the Indian Ocean. Northeast of Madras, India was on 13 March a Norwegian merchant torpedoed and sunk. Further more were recently Japanese submarines seen off the east coast of India. The J.I.C. commented that the large number of reports dealing with the Japanese submarines based at Penang, Malaysia(1) suggesting more and more submarine activity in the future to be expected.

1. The Japanese 8th Submarine Squadron was based at Swettenham Pier, George Town, Malaysia between 1942-1944. Furthermore was also the German Gruppe Monsun or Monsoon Group submarines stationed at Penang between 1943-1944 and were Italian submarines like the Marconi-class Luigi Torelli active in the Far East.
