An item dated Amsterdam, Netherlands 22 August reported the arrival on the Elbe, Germany of the German Greenland whaler Witte Zee commandeur Riewert Fredriksz who on 29 July on 77.40 degrees was captured by a French privateer from Saint Malo armed with 24 guns and ransomed for 4,000 guilders. On 3 August was the privateer joined by two warships (1-64 guns, 1-58 guns) of Brest which captured on 30 July the Dutch whaler Salmander of Zaandam 1 whale. The French captains possessed a detailed list of all the whalers in Greenland adding that 2 privateers of Saint Malo, 1 of Brest and a small privateer were also in Greenland. According to Fredriksz were the French not familair with the navigation in the Greenland whaling grounds while they offered the crew 5,000 guilders if they were brought to the whaling. The crew however thought that the French especially was interested in the Magdalena Bay where the Bremen whalers were. The Witte Zee left Greenland on 4 August (?) bringing with a list of the catch results of the whalers totally 60 whales 2,943.5 quardelen blubber whilse several whalers still caught nothing.
