The armament of the Dutch merchant ship Straat Soenda in the Second World War

According to the list and supplements 1-2 on 13 September 1945 BDZ No. 673sent by the office of armament the Royal Netherlands Navy located at 41 East 42nd Street, New York 17, USA. There were no complete records available, so there were several sources used to compile the list. Sometimes the kind of guns gave indirect information regarding the origin such as 4”/BL and 12 pounder guns were British mostly supplied in the United Kingdom, Canada or Curacao. The 4.7” guns were old Japanese guns placed on some vessels in the begin of the war at Singapore and some 4” guns in the same period at Surabaya, Dutch East Indies. The trade in which the ship was used gave also an indication were the guns were supplied, for example involved in the Pacific trade means supplied at the West Coast.

Laid down by N.V. C. van der Giessen&Zonen’s Scheepswerven, Krimpen aan den IJssel, Netherlands with yard number 654 on 2 December 1937, launched on 18 October 1938, delivered in February 1939 to the N.V. Koninklijke Paketvaart-Maatschappij, Batavia, Netherlands East Indies, managed by the Ministry of (War) Transport, London, England between 21 November 1941-25 July 1945, since 7 August 1947 owned/managed by the Java-China Paketvaart Lijnen N.V., Amsterdam, Noord-Holland, Netherlands, as Kota Selatan owner/manager Pacific International Lines (Pte) Ltd, Singapore, Singapore since 10 December 1947, grounded on a coral reef near Pemba Island, Kenya on 20 May 1971 and sunk.

Gross tonnage 6,439.00 tons, net tonnage 3,859.00 tons, deadweight 8,622.00 tons, since 1947 respectively 8,314, 5,119 and 9,390 tons. grain capacity 509,367 cubic feet en bale capacity 486,775 feet and and as dimensions 138.83 (between perpendiculars)-145.16 (over all) x 18.96 (moulded) x 11.89 (moulded depth) x 8.53 (maximum draught) metres.
