An item reported that aircraft sighted on 31 July in the Rabaul-New Ireland area a Japanese force consisting of at least 3 cruisers, 1 large vessel which was posssbile a seaplane tender, 3 transports, 7 medium merchant ships and 6 unidentified ships.
