An item reported that at Baltimore, USA the first of a new line of ammunition ships was built namely the USS Suribachi. Her design shows a fast replenishment-at-sea operations ship transporting ammunition and explosives. She was fitted out with elevators in the stowage for handling ammunition. Able to handle ships at both sides at the same time. Air conditioned, redisgned crew quarters and additional crew facilities. The new class was to be named after volcanos with a light displacement of 7,500 tons, cargo capacity 7,500 tons and as dimensions 512 (over all) x 72 feet. Steam turbine propulsion, singe screw. Crew numbered 350 men including 20 officers. Armament 4x2-7.6cm/3” cal 50 guns.(1)

1. Suribach-class suceeded by Nitro-class. Laid down by Bethlehem Sparrows Point Shipyard on 31 January 1955, launched on 2 November 1955, commissioned on 17 November 1956, decommisssioned on 2 December 1994, stricken on 12 December 1996 and sold to be broken up on 8 June 2009.
