American cargo submarine USS Barbero reconverted into guided missile submarine according to the Australia Station Intelligence Summary dated 1 February 1956

An item reported that the American cargo submarine USS Barbero was being reconverted into an experimental guided-missile submarine.(1)

Note

1. Laid down by General Dynamic Electric Boat, Groton, Connecticut, USA on 25 March 1943, launched on 12 December 1943, commissioned on 29 April 1944, in reserve since 25 April 1945, converted into a cargo submarine and part of an experiment 1949-1950, in reserve since 30 June 1950, converted into a SCB 118 Regulus I nuclear missile submarine in 1955. decommissioned on 30 June 1964, stricken on 1 July 1964 and sunk as a target off Pearl Harbor on 7 October 1964. Part of Balao-class diesel-electric submarines preceded by Gato-class and succeeded by Tench-class.
