A letter of the German naval attache in Japan dated Tokyo, Japan 4 May 1938 reported that the new Japanese tanker Itsukushima Maru of the Kyodo Gyogyo returned for her first world voyage on 28 April 1938 at Yokohama, Japan. In begin 1938 departed she to Antarctica where she took 11.000 whale oil over from the whalers. From there she steamed to Europe, unloaded at Oslo, Norway, Hamburg etc. and returned via Los Angeles, USA. She was in 1937 built with a gross register tonnage of 17.000 tons. Due to her modern construction transported she in the winter whale oil and served in the summer as a common tanker.(1)

Laid down by Kawasaki as a merchant tanker for Nippon Suisan, Tokyo on 21 April 1937, luanched on 4 September 1937, completed on 20 December 1937, left Japan as part of the Antarctic Ocean whaling fleet on 15 January 1938, requisitioned by the navy and registered as an auxiliary tanker on 22 November 1941, armed at the Kure Naval Yard in July 1942, sunk in an Allied aircraft-submarine attack 2 miles west of Pulau Kalampunian North Borneo on 1 November 1944, stricken from navy list on 10 December 1944, her wreck was discovered in September 1945 arrived on 26 April 1954 at Hong Kong and expected to be broken up.
