The Argentinean dredgers M.O.P. 215 C and the 216 C built in 1927 and 1929 in the Netherlands according to Dutch newspapers

Local newspapers can supply a lot of interesting details dealing with merchant trade shipping and building. Details which for instance no longer can find in another way due to the fact the archives of the shipping companies and yards are missing, incomplete or not for (historical) research accessible. The yard De Industrie of the firm A.F. Smulders at Slikkerveer was specialized in building dredgers and floating cranes also for destinations abroad. In 1905 started the firm a new yard at Schiedam called Gusto.

Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant evening edition dated 23 August 1927. Schiedam 22 August. Last Saturday was at the yard of A.F. Smulders the cutter dredger M.O.P. 215 C launched. Her dimensions were 44 x 11,30 x 2,80 meter (hold) and she was build under special supervision of a representative of the Argentinean government engineer L.R. Solari and Bureau Veritas and was by that last organisation classified in the highest classes for this kind of vessels. She was fitted out with a vertical triple 575 ihp engine with the necessary auxiliary tools directly coupled to the sand pump while the steam was delivered by two boilers of 175 square meter heating surface each with a pressure of 12 atmosphere and a vertical auxiliary boiler of 9 square meter and a pressure of 8 atmosphere. The boilers were able to use oil-residue as fuel. There was also a 200 hp steam engine available to drive the cutter head, a engine for lifting the pivot pillars which were placed in a drum, a steam winch to operate the suction pipe, a steam winch for the aft anchor and a combined steam winch to manoeuvring by using pivot pillars or anchors. The complete suction equipment was operated and the ships’ manoeuvring out of a deck cabin placed in the centre of the bridge. The complete vessel was electric lightened and was excluded the several large cabins for the crew fitted out with an ice engine and cool chamber.

Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant evening edition dated 28 September 1928. Rotterdam, 27 September. Today was with success at the N,V, Werf voorheen Rykee en Col, the hopper dredger M.O.P. 216 C launched The casco was built by J. en K. Smit’s Scheepswerven at Kinderdijk for account of the Department of Public Affairs at Buenos Aires. The complete dredger equipment was also made by J. en K. Smit. She was the first hopper dredger of this size fitted out with a diesel-electric installation. Her main dimensions were 90 (between perpendiculars) x 18 x 6 meter. She was divided in ten watertight compartments. In the fore ship and foredeck cabins were the cabins for the officers and the crewmembers, all comfortable and large sizes. The hold had a capacity of 1.500 cubic meter and fitted out with four lines of each six valves which could be opened to dump the dredged specie in sea. The valves were closed by hydraulic cylinders. The two mud pumps and pipes were placed in a separate room and were driven by electric engines. The main engines built by J. en K. Smit’s Machinefabrieken at Kinderdijk consisted of 4 four tact Smith-MAN diesel engines without compressors with a total power of 3.600 ehp. The diesel engines were coupled with four dynamo’s of the Ward Leonard system to drive the two pump engines, the two screw engines, the cutter engine and several auxiliary tools. When loaded her speed was 9 knots. In the engine room were also placed a Smith-Man 4-tact diesel of 78 ehp without a compressor and a similar engine of 12 ehp coupled to a auxiliary compressor. All electro engines were from the wheel house operated. The electric installation was made by the N.V. Electrototechnische Industrie at Slikkerveer, Netherlands.
