British first class protected cruiser HMS Diadem 1896-1921


Of the Diadem-class with as sister ships the Amphitrite, Andromeda, Argonaut, Ariadne, Europa, Niobe and Spartiate. Laid down at Fairfield, Govan, Scotland 23 January 1896, launched 21 October 1896, completed 19 July 1898, since 1914 a training vessel for stokers, placed in October of the next year in reserve, in January 1918 again training ship for stokers and 9 May 1921 sold to Ward, Morecambe be broken up. Building costs 582,662-554,863 British pound. This class was preceded by the Powerful-class while she herself was succeeded by the Cressy-class.

With a displacement of 11,000 tons were her dimensions 453 (between perpendiculars)- 4626” (over all) x 69 x 25’6”-27‘6“. The triple expansion engines supplied during the trial 17,262 ihp making a speed of 20,65 knots possible. With a speed of 19 knots and a coal bunker capacity of 1,900 tons was her range 2,000 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 677 men. The armament consisted of 16x1-6”guns, 14x1-12pdrs, 3x1-3pdrs and finally 2-18” submerged torpedo tubes. Her armour consisted of 6”shields for the guns and a deck of 2-4.5” thickness. According to wikipedia was the conning tower protected by 12” for and 2” aft.
