Norwegian floating whale factory Sir James Clark Ross in 1935

The photo was published in the Dutch magazine Gelderland in woord en beeld dated 1 November 1935 according to which the ship recently arrived at New York with on board 18.000 ton whale oil.


Named after the British naval officer and explorer, born at London 15 April 1800 and died at the age of 61 at Aylesbury 3 April 1862. He was known for instance for the Antarctic expedition with the British navy bomb vessels HMS Erebus and Terror in 1838-1843.

Built in 1930 at Tees Furness shipyard at Middlesbourough, United Kingdom. Owned by Johan Randmussen and Magnus Know of Sandefjord. Measured 14.362 BRT and 8.127 NRt with as dimensions 537‘90”x 74’3½”x 34’4”. According to the newspaper Evening Post dated 30 September 1939 returned she in March 1931 from the Atlantic with a cargo of 113.000 barrels whale oil with a value of 450.000 pound.
