Japanese cruiser Niitaka (1902-1924)
Ordered in the budget year 1897 was she not earlier as 7 January 1902 laid down at the Yokosuka Naval Arsenal at Yokosuka city, Kanagawa, launched 15 November 1902, completed 27 January 1904, a typhoon caused her stranding 26 August off the coast of Karafuto with just 15 survivors of the 299 men on board and she was stricken of the Navy list 1 April 1924. Dimensions 102 x 13,44 x 4,92 metre and a displacement of 3,.366 tons or 3.420 ton. Her engines and Niclausse 16 boilers provided 9.500 hp allowing a speed of 20 knots. Her crew numbered between the 287 and 320 men. The armour consisted of 76mm on the deck and a 100mm conning tower. The armament consisted of 6-15.2 cm guns, 10-10 pdr guns and 4-4.7cm machine guns. Originally a cruiser of the Niitaka-class (with just one sister ship the Tsushima) she was since 1 September 1921 fitted out as a second class coastal defence vessel.
