Portuguese slaver Margarida at Batavia, Dutch East Indies according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 31 May 1844

According to tidings from the Dutch East Indies arrived 23 September at Batavia the Portuguese bark Margarida master T.A. d’Aquina destined towards Macao with on board 46 natives of the Portuguese part of the island Timor. The master claimed that the natives were to be rise at Macao in the Christian religion to learn there a profession. This story was untrue and a part of the natives which landed at Batavia for different reasons were secretly sold as slaves. Her master was taken prisoner waiting to be brought for the court of justice.
