Search for wreck of Dutch East Indiaman Meermin

On http://www.gozuidafrika.com was on 15 January 2009 the news published that South African archaeologists are intending to recover the wreck of the Dutch East Indiaman Meermin. In March 1766 had the crew of the ship to deal with a revolt of 140 slaves. The latter were bought at Madagascar. Merchantman Johan Crause bought on that island some spears and let the slaves clean them. Unfortunately the now armed slaves attacked the crew. Of the 62 crewmembers some were killed. The survivors became hostages. It ended in a massacre when the crew managed to alarm the coast of the event. Partly the slaves went on land and died in a fight with local farmers. The remaining slaves fought on board with the crew. Her captain Gerrit Christopher Muller cut the cable and the ship drifted away. She stranded 9 April on a sandbank and disappeared in the sand off Kaap Agulhas. The hooker Meermin was built for the East India Company chamber Amsterdam and since 1759 in service.
