The French navy schooner La Jouvencelle seen through the eyes of two Dutch navy officers in December 1845

For years was in the Netherlands a magazine published dealing with maritime affairs in the whole world, navy and merchant, for instance in 1847 an account of the voyage made by the two Dutch navy Lieutenants 2nd class jhr. J.E.WE.R. van Raders and D.L. Wolfson to the Caribbean. Their order was to investigate if there were new inventions of value for the sugar industry available. They departed from Paramaribo, Surinam 22 November 1845 on board of the schooner Zr. Ms. Vos of the Royal Dutch Navy. 4th December they went on board of the Reindeer, owned by the Royal Mail Steampacket Company to continue their journey towards Grenada. Later they went at Guadeloupe on board of the French colonial schooner La Jouvencelle, with permission from Captain Layrle, governor of Guadeloupe including the islands Saintes, Marie Galande, Desirade and the French part of St. Martin. They arrived at Basse Terre and were brought towards Pointe-a-Pitre. The La Jouvencelle was of the two small schooners stationed at Guadeloupe, armed with 12-4 pdr carronades, commanded by a 24 years old Lieutenant de vaisseau and 2 volontaires as etat-major. Her total crew numbered 36 men. The larger schooners were armed with 4-24pdr carronades and a crew of 40 men, including a midshipmen. These vessels are narrow with a low board and a disproportionate high rigging. This design was not longer used in the French naval shipbuilding, The fast and neat sloops were made at Cherbourg and excellently suited. There was one interesting remark made by the Dutch officers. If the La Jouvencelle was representative for the French navy, than made this navy progress regarding the mutual tone between the sailors and their treatment by the officers. She was set on stocks and launched in 1841 and served until 1858.
