Japanese protected cruiser Takachiho (1884-1914)



Together with her sister ship Naniwa of the by sir William White improved design of the Esmeralda. Both ships were the first Japanese protected cruisers. She was laid down at the yard of Armstrong, Walker, United Kingdom 10 April 1884, launched 16 March 1885, completed 28 March 1886 and torpedoed by the German torpedo boat S 90 which tried to escape from on Tsing Tao, China 17 October 1914. Since 1907 she served as a minelayer.

With a normal displacement of 3,650 tons were her dimensions 300 (between perpendiculars) x 46 x 20'3" (full load). Her engines provided 7,000 ihp allowing a speed of 18,5 knots. Her coal bunker capacity was between 350 and 800 tons. The original armament consisted of 2x1-10.3" guns, 6x1-5.9" guns, 2x1-6pdrs, 10 four barrelled Nordenfeld guns, 4 Gatling machineguns and 4-14" torpedo tubes. Her crew numbered 325 men. The armour consisted of a 2-3" deck, 1,5" gun shields and a 1,5" conning tower.
