American LMSR USNS Yano (T-AKR 297) 1980-


The several websites I used all supply more or less different details.
On 1 June 1980 by the yard of Lindovaerftet at Odense (Odense Staalskibsvaerft), Denmark (building no. 84) handed (1) over to the Maersk Line (A.P. Moller) as the container ship Leise Maersk, in 1987 was she lengthened by Hyundai. Became in the 90’s property of the US navy. The yard of National Steel and Shipbuilding Company at San Diego, California rebuild her in 1994-1997 as a medium-speed roll-on/roll-off add on 8 February 1997 was she handed over to the US Navy Military Sealift Command as the Yano after the US Army sergeant 1st class Rodney J.T. Yano (she was called Leise Maersk until 30 April 1996.). The ship is charter managed by the Bay Ship Management with as homeport Newport News. Virginia.

As the Yano is her IMO no. 7825409., MMSI no. 367821000 and call sign NAQH. Her crew numbers 26/45 (civilian sailors)-50 (while in active service), in fact US Merchant Marine Personnel; www.msc.navy says 30 contract marines. With a displacement of 54,450 (full load) are her dimensions 277 x 32,2 x 19,6 metres or 908.8’x 105.6’ 34.8’ The website www.shipspotting.com mentioned a gross tonnage of 61,221 tons, a summer deadweight of 65,404 tons and as dimensions 268 x 32 x 9,8 metres and calls her a vehicles carrier. Cargo capacity 312,462feet2. Her speed is 24 knots. She is unarmed although fitted out with a landing area for helicopters.

1. The website http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odense_Steel_Shipyard said that she was launched on 19 September 1980 with a tonnage of 30,694 tons.
The website http://www.clydeserver.com/shipping/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=12154 said that she was laid down on 31 March 1980, launched on 19 September, baptized Leise Maersk on 10 October and delivered by the yard on 17 December al in the same year. Her cargo capacity was at that moment 2,052 TEU since her lengthening in 1984 by the Hitachi Zosen Innoshima Works at Innoshima increased to 3,016 TEU. Her dimensions were 202,01-212,48  x 32.26 x 19,82 x 12,52 metres after her lengthening altered into 259,32-269,91 x 19,92 x 13,03 metres. As a result of this lengthening were her gross tonnage and deadweight also increased from 30.694 and 31,600 tons into 43,325 and 53,623 tons. This website also that she was in October 1993 sold to the USA and that’s she in April 1994 was delivered by the yard at San Diego in April 1994.
