British destroyer depot ship HMS Tyne (F24) 1938-1973


Of the Hecla-class with just one sister ship the Hecla. Laid down at the yard of Scotts Shipbuilding&Engineering Company at Greenock, Scotland on 15 July 1938, launched on 28 February two years later, commissioned on 28 February 1941, decommissioned on 27 March 1961, as part of the so-called operational reserve was she used an a harbour accommodation ship (www.godfreydykes.info) at Portsmouth(1), July three years added to the Disposal List in and sold on 11 August 1972 to be broken up (www.godfreydykes.info, according to www.royalnavyreservearchive.org broken up at Barrow in September 1972) or in 1973 (other sources).

With a displacement of 11,000 (standard)-14,000 (deep load) and as dimensions 1893,33 x 20,1 x 6,72 metres. The 2 shaft engines and 4 boilers supplied 7,500 hp allowing a speed of 17 knots. She had a coal bunker capacity of 1,200 tons. The armament consisted of 4x2-4.5”quick firing guns, 2x4-2pdr pompom guns increased during the Second World War with 15-2cm anti aircraft guns. Her crew numbered 818 men. Transported with her 80-21” torpedo tubes and 150 depth charges to provide the destroyers. To be able to transport heavy stores was she fitted out with 3 cranes.

1. The website http://www.royalnavyresearcharchive.org.uk/BPF-EIF/Ships/Tyne.htm mentioned that she was indeed an accommodation ship at Portsmouth in 1961 but that she later was used for the same purpose at Devonport. At the latter naval base became sje in 1968 maintenance ship for the Reserve Fleet.
