French naval preparations at Toulon according to the Dutch newspaper Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 2 July 1844

An item reported that at Toulon on 26 June none new tidings from Algeria were received. On board of the steamship le Rubis was a large amount of Congrevische vuurpijlen” loaded. This ship was to join the expedition of the Prince van Joinville to the Moroccan coasts. The ships of the line Marengo (1) and Neptune were fitted out for departure to sea and embarking troops. According rumours these two ships were to join the Prince who possessed than five ships of the line.
