French transport Le Cerf lost according to the Dutch newspaper Middelburgsche Courant dated 17 February 1871

An item referred to the Shipping and Mercantile Gazette which reported that the French transport Le Cerf struck the rocks of Cape la Hogue and was smashed into pieces. Just 10 of the 150 sailors were saved while the troops numbering 1,008 men all drowned.(1)

Note
1. The New Zealand newspaper West Coast Times dated 3 May reported similar and that she was wrecked in the night of 7 February with on board 1,080 wounded and convalescents and a crew of 140 men of which 10 survived. The soldiers were sent to Calais coming from North France and were destined towards Cherbourg, Brest and Bordeaux and were described all having no belongings and clothed in rags.
