An item reported that the Spanish cabinet decided to decommission and sell twenty of her warships while they did not longer meet the demands of a modern navy. The income was to be used for building new ships.
The edition dated 17 August reported that the temporarily minister of navy Silvela decided to sell more as fifty ships including two cruisers, not suitable to go sea anymore. The yards and arsenals were found to be in really worse condition. Most of the boilers belonging of the ships of the training squadron were in a hardly sufficient condition. To solve this problems he needed a lon of 24.000.000 (Dutch guilders?).
