Dutch navy deserters living in Australia according to the Dutch newspaper De Tijd dated 28 February 1912

An item reported that when the Dutch navy visited in 1911 Australia more as 100 men deserted and stayed behind in Australia. In the magazine Het Anker was the story told of some of these men. All earned a good living and did not regret their decision. Some worked at the railroads Perth-Adelaide with a good salary of 10 shillings daily working eight hours a day. At Sydney were some working as dockworker for 2,5 shillings each hour and other working in the wireless telegraphy business. Former marine Kaptein and two other marines bought in West Australia a large peace of land for farming (vegetables) for own account.
