An item reported that a week earlier the first submarine of Israel the Tanin officially was commissioned d at the British naval base. She was commanded by Sgan Aloef Josef Dror and departed in the meantime towards Israel where the complete navy of Israel was waiting for her. The crew consisted exclusively of Israeli and after a short ceremony was the national flag to be hoisted.(1)

1. She is after the Six Days War in June 1967 used as a torpedo target for the INS Dolphin after being damaged in the same war. Elsewhere is said that she in 1972 still existed when they wanted to dispose her. She was the former British submarine HMS Springer (P264). Laid down at the shipyard of Cammell Laird&Company Limited, Birkenhead 19 January 1944, launched on 14 May 1945 and commissioned on 2 Augustus and finally sold to Israel on 9 October 1958 in which navy she was commissioned in December a year later. With a displacement of 814/872 (surfaced)-990 (submerged) tons were her dimensions 66 x 7,16 x 3,4 metres or 217’x 23’6” x 11’. Her crew in British service numbered 48 men and she was armed with 6-21” bow torpedo tubes, 1-2cm guns, 3-0.50” machine guns and 1-3” or 4” gun.
