German government regarded armed merchant ships being hostile according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Tilburgsche Courant dated 10 February 1916

An item dated Berlin 10 February reported that the German cabinet officially announced that she would consider on short term armed merchant ships as hostile ships. Neutral countries were warned not to use armed merchant ships belonging to the enemies of Germany.
