German passenger transship Monte Cervantes in problems according to the Dutch newspaper De Zeeuw dated 25 January 1930
An item reported that the board of the Hamburg Sued Amerikanische D. Gesellschaft ship yesterday morning (the 24th) received a telegram from the Argentinean department of navy that all men on board were safe. The Argentinean transport Vicente Lopez was lying alongside to take over the luggage of the stranded ship. Argentinean warships which were in the neighbourhood were ordered to come and to take positions alongside of the Monte Cervantes. One telegram reported that she sunk with her captain Dreyer on board but that crew and passengers numbering 1,500 men were safely landed. The press association Reuter reported that until the last moment crew member stayed on board while her captain did not leave the bridge. According to Reuter there were 302 sailors and 1,120 passengers on board. Dreyer was 56 years old, since 1899 in service of this shipping company, since March 1929 captain of the Monte Cervantes and a very experienced sailor and respected captain.
