Dutch minelayer Hr.Ms. Thor (1876-1940) around 1920


Belonged to the 1st steam gunboats wit as sister ships Wodan, Freyr. Njord, Tyr, Braga, Vidar, Vali, Balder, Heimdall, Ulfr, Hadda, Dufa, Udur, Bulgia an Hefring. A modified British Staunch-design and which was enlarged compared with the 2nd class steam gunboats. With as dimensions 26,62 (load line fore-backside stern)-27,84 (over all) x 8,20 (outside hull) x 2,06 (fore loaded)-2,22 (aft loaded) x 3,032 (hold amidships between deck and underside keel) and a displacement of 24,745 cubic metres or 284 tons. The two 2-vertical cylinder compound engines allowed with 110 hp a speed (designed) of 7,55 miles. Original armament consisted of 1-28cm gun and 3-3.7cm guns of which one a revolver. In 1906 was the main gun replaced by 1-7,5cm gun. On stocks at the shipyard of Christie, Nolet&de Kuyper at Delfshaven in 1876, launched in 1877, 1918 converted into a minelayer, 1923 added to the sailor training ship Schorpioen at Hellevoetsluis, 1926 again converted into a minelayer, captured on 14 May 1940 by the German forces. The Dutch newspaper Schiedamsche courant dated 13 September 1876 reported that the firm Christie, Nolet&de Kuyper received the order of building three steam gunboats large model to be named Wodan, Thor and Freya armed with a 29cm breech loading gun.
