US Antarctic expeditions to investigate Soviet Union intentions according to the Dutch newspaper Gereformeerd gezinsblad dated 27 October 1954

An item referred to the magazine Fortune which reported that the US cabinet sent expedition towards the Antarctic, the first one in December, to investigate if the Soviet Union was testing nuclear weapons. A second task was to investigate what the meaning was of the mysterious annual voyages of the Soviet Union whaler Slava to the Antarctic. She always avoided with a large arch the international fleets, left as last ship the trappings ground and was presumably fuelled by the tankers which transported the whale-oil.

Note
1. At that moment was the so-called Cold War (1945-1991) still major issue in the world with a struggle between the Western and the Eastern worlds for political and military hegemony. The Netherlands were part of the NATO.
