German freighter Bethania captured by British according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag dated 12 September 1914
An item dated London 12 September referred to a telegram received from Kingston, Jamaica reporting that last Monday a British ship captured the German Bethania of the Hamburg-America line which was loaded with 600 tons coal and provisions for six months destined for the cruisers Dresden and Karlsruhe. She managed to throw her armament as an auxiliary cruiser over board before she was captured. Her crew and 500 reservists were taken prisoner of war.
