An item dated Buenos Aires 28 June reported that on 22 June on a distance of 50 miles from the Mexican coast the Mexican tankers Tuxpan and Chiapas were torpedoed.(1) The newspapers Dagblad van Rotterdam, the Limburger Koerier and the De Gooi- en Eemlander dated 29 June confirmed this news.

1. Gaylord T.M. Kelshall in his book The U-boat war in the Caribbean published Annapolis 1884/1994 wrote that both ships were sunk by the German Uboat U 129 although calling the Chiapas Las Choapas. According to the website http://trove.nla.gov.au where the newspaper The Argus of Melbouyrne of Monday 29 June 1942 is digital available were both tankers Tuxpan and Choapas former Italian vessels seized while seeking refugee in Mexican harbours. Of the Choapas was the crew missing like four men of the Tuxpan of which crew one man was killed. The website http://www.newspaperarchive.com reported that the Choapas was the former Italian Atlas torpedoed within sight of the lifeboats of the Tuxpan which latter ship was torpedoed two hours earlier. The Tuxpan was the former 7,000 tons Italian tanker Americano which seek refugee in the harbour of Tampico.
