Coastal defence ram USS Katahdin launched according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad 1892-1893 no. 11

An item referred to the foreign magazine Le Yacht reporting that the coastal defence ram Katahdin was launched on 4 February [1893] at Bath. She was built according to the principles of rear admiral Ammen with a displacement of 2.183 tons and as dimensions 76,5 x 13,7 x 4,6 metres. The horsepower of 4.800 should allow a (expected) speed of 17 miles. The armour consisted of a turtle shaped deck of at least 5cm thickness, wile the curved sides were protected by 15cm and the conning tower by 45cm. The armament consisted of 4-6pd quick firing guns and off course the steel-built ram , a casting with a weight of 10,8 ton.(1)

1. In September 1909 off Rappahannock Spit, Virginia sunk while being used as a target. Daniel Ammen (15 May 1820 Brown County, Ohio-11 July 1898 Washington) served in the US navy during the Civil War and afterwards leaving in 1878 actual service in the rank of rear admiral. He was also author of maritime oriented publications. For the Katahdin-design he used the designs of the British torpedo ram HMS Polyphemus.
