Italian armoured cruiser San Marco 1907-1931



Sister ship San Giorgio. Laid down on 2 January 1907 at the Arsenale di Castellamara di Stabia launched on 20 December 1908  and completed on 7 February 1911 and finally used as target in 1931. With a displacement  9.352 (standard)-11.000 (normal) tons and as dimensions 420’11” (between perpendiculars)-462½ (over all) x 69’x 25½’ (mean)-27’ (maximum). The Parsons turbines supplied 20.000 ship while driving 4 screws allowing a speed of 23 knots. Coal bunker capacity 700 (normal)-1.400 (maximum) tons allowing with a speed of 10 knots a range of 4.800 nautical miles and with 21¼ knots around 2.500 nautical miles. All guns were electrically controlled. The armament consisted of 2x2-10” guns in turrets fore (31”above the waterline) and aft (22‘(above the waterline), 4x2-7.5: guns placed amidships (broadside22‘above the waterline), 10-14pd guns, 6-14pd anti aircraft guns, 6 machineguns, 2 submerged 18”-torpedo tubes located in the broadside. Of the 7.5” guns could 2x2 fire straight forward or afterwards adding to 2x1-10“ guns firing fore or afterwards For a broadside fire were all 10“ guns available and 4-7.5“ guns. Her crew numbered 762 men. The armour consisted of a 2¼”(ends)-8” (amidships) thick belt, armoured decks with a thickness of 1¾”and 1½”, the lower redoubt protected by 7”, the main turrets by 8”, the “secondary turrets by 6¼”, the citadel by 7” and finally the conning tower by 9¾”.
