Trials of monitor USS Monterey just partly satisfactory launched according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad 1892-1893 no. 11

An item referred to the foreign magazine Army and Naval reporting that during the trials of the monitor USS Monterey were not entirely successful. According to the contract was a minimum horsepower of 5.400 hp demanded and although she reached even a maximum horsepower of 5.800 hp was her medium horsepower just 5.250 hp. A second less expected problem was that already with a speed of 10-13 miles her complete fore deck under water was to a distance of 10 feet of the forward turret despite the very calm water.
