Aged Russian barbette ship Tschesma sunk while used as target according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1913-1914 no. 7

An item reported that during gun practices of the Russian Black Sea fleet the aged battleship Tschesma was sunk while heavily damaged and could not be salvaged. The intention was to test especially her watertight compartments and the fittings of her armour.(1)

Note
1. She was laid down at Sevastopol in 1883 as part of the Ekaterina-class barbette ships with as sister ships the Ekaterina II, Sinop and Georgie Pobiednonosets. Laid down in May 1886 was she 3 years later completed and according to Conway’s All the World’s fighting ships 1860-1905 stricken in 1907. So she remained existing until she was sunk as above mentioned.
