US vice admiral Simms and the anti submarine warfare according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant dated 19 Aril 1919

An item reported that US vice admiral Sims during the war commanding the American fleet in the European waters again pointed out that it was only certain that a submarine was destroyed if she was found back on the sea bottom and her mark seen or if crewmembers of her were saved. Allied forces destroyed 200 submarines which could not stay longer as 30 or 40 miles submerged. He expressively praised the value of depth charges.

Note
1. William Sowden Simms (15 October 1858 Port Hope, Ontario, Canada-25 September 1936 Boston, Massachusetts, USA), served in the US navy between 1880-1922 ending his career as full admiral.
