The Austrian, Greek, Russian and Turkish navies in the Black Sea area or in the Levant according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 16 March 1829
The Greek government published 21 December a statement dealing with the
announcement of the Austrian commanding officer Dandolo at Smyrna that the
Greek started again piracy. The government had ordered to size all ships which
transport grain for Turkish account towards Constantinople to prevent a
shortage in her own country. As the tidings arrived that the Porto hired ships
to transport grain from Asia and Alexandria towards Constantinople the Greek
navy was ordered to hold op these ships and to send the grain belonging to the
Porte towards Greece. The grain belonging to neutral merchants was to be paid
for comparable with the price for which the grain was to be sold at
Constantinople. It was a pity that the Austrian officer misunderstood the
intentions of the Greek government. The Russian admiral Van Heyden which fleet
was lying off Poros arrived 24 December with some ships at Egina and mainly
thanks to him the negotiations were so successful for Dandolo.
