In a news item dated New York 7 May was reported that more as a hundred
German sailors were arrested by the immigration authorities as being ordered to
do by Washington.(1) The men were former crew members of the tankers of the
Standard Oil Company and who were dismissed at New York when the Second World
war broke out. As 60 days were passed since they were dismissed they could be
accused of neglecting the immigration law of 1924. While the company wasn’t
able to send them home after dismissing them they stayed at hotels in New York.
The costs were paid by the company. The newspaper Noordbrabants dagblad het
huisgezin of the same dated confirmed this item.

1. Although the Netherlands were in 1941 no longer independent since the German invasion in 1940 the newspapers were neutral in their comments dealing with this issue. One must notice that Germany and the USA were not in war in May 1941. Germany declared not earlier war on the USA as on 11 December that same year.
