The Austrian, Egyptian, Greek and Turkish navies in the Levant according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 13 July 1825

Vienna, 1 July. The newspaper Oesterreichische Beobachter published tidings dealing with the battle at Modon in the night of 12-13 May. According to this the report of the captain of the Dutch brig Zr.Ms. Coerier wasn’t correct if compared with the very detailed report of major Bandiera of the Austrian goelette of war Arethusa dated Zea 28 May. According to the latter offcier lost the Egyptian fleet the gabarre Azia, 3 corvettes, 3 brigs, 4 Turkish and 2 Ionian transports, all ships except for the first one very old and not suitable for service. The loss of these hips didn’t effect the siege of Navarino and the operations of Ibrahim Pasha in general.(1)

The seraskier Reschid Mehmed was waiting for the fleet of the Captain Pasha to blockade Missolunghi and Anatolico from the south side. The grand admiral left 26 May the Hellespont with 34 warships and some transports towards the Archipelago. A Greek squadron of 30 ships was waiting near Mytelen and during the heavy exchange of gunfire were some Greek fire ships send to attack the Turkish. According to Turkish reports 7 fire ships were burnt without causing any damage while 4 Greeks were captured or shut down. Between Cape Oro and the island Andros the Greek while reinforced by 7 Hydriotic ships their attack causing a Turkish loss of 2 or 3 ships. It was obvious that a 26-gun corvette separated by a storm from the fleet by a storm and pursued by 3 Greek ships was wrecked on the coast of the island Syra. Her crew of 280 men was saved while setting the corvette on fire. The crew was however attacked by the inhabitants who killed 22 European sailors, 50 cossacks of Zaporag and 2 Jewish doctors and maltreating the Turkish sailors. The latter were not killed but transported with Hydriotic vessels to Naopli-di-Romania.
