The Brazilian navy in action according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 13 November 1824

London, 9 November. An extract of a letter dated Pernambuco 20 September written by Captain James Norton of the Brazilian brig Nitheroy to a friend in London. He wrote that he was appointed to commanding officer of this ship while Captain Taylor was dismissed the same day. While commanded by commodore Jewett they left Rio Janeiro to join lord Cochrane off Pernambuco who in the mean time shot at the time while they refused to surrender. Norton persuaded the admiral to approach the defence works at Recife to shot at these. He immediately approached the fortress and started shooting followed by the Piranga from a short distance until the sun set. The next morning they started again with shooting. The terms of surrender which Governor Manuel Carvalho offered were not accepted by general Lima and Norton went with officers, soldiers and marines on land and within 4 hours Recife and the fortress were captured. The governor fled on board of the British warship Tweed.
