The French navy off Oran, Morocco according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 16 July 1844

According to a tiding from Oran dated 28 June arrived the squadron commanded by the prince de Joinville at 16.00 o'clock there. It consisted of three ships of the line and the frigate la Belle Poule (1) transporting 1.058 men excluded another four landing companies of at least 150 men but if necessary of each 200 men. On board of the squadron was the navy officer Lejeune who lived in Morocco and which was familiar with the waters there.

From Toulon was 9 July written that the squadron commanded by rear admiral Parseval-Deschênes consisted of four ships of the line and which were provided with victuals enough for five months and waiting for a telegram to depart. Parseval with a higher seniority in rank as the prince couldn't serve under these command and for that reason wouldn't leave Toulon. It was believed that he would exchange the 3-decker l'Ocean (2) for the 3-decker le Souverain.(3) The minister of navy ordered 6 July to buy immediately for account of the government the steamships le Liamone and le Var (5) owned by E. Gérard and which were used for the line Toulon-Corsica.
