Trieste, 24 June. According to the newest tidings from
Greece were the inhabitants of the island Sciathos despite a fierce defence
against the Turkish fleet forced to retreat after a long bombardment. During
the attack in the mountains the Turkish losses were so large that they went
back on board of the ships and the Captain Pasha departed towards Salonika. A
part of the Turkish fleet was sailed towards Candia to provide the Turkish
fortress with victuals. A Greek squadron transporting troops to this
destination met the Turkish squadron at the same moment that the latter
intended to enter the harbour of Suda. After a short but heavy fight the
Turkish squadron was mostly destroyed or scattered and some vessels captured by
the Greek.
