The Greek and Turkish navies in the Mediterranean according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 13 July 1824

Trieste, 24 June. According to the newest tidings from Greece were the inhabitants of the island Sciathos despite a fierce defence against the Turkish fleet forced to retreat after a long bombardment. During the attack in the mountains the Turkish losses were so large that they went back on board of the ships and the Captain Pasha departed towards Salonika. A part of the Turkish fleet was sailed towards Candia to provide the Turkish fortress with victuals. A Greek squadron transporting troops to this destination met the Turkish squadron at the same moment that the latter intended to enter the harbour of Suda. After a short but heavy fight the Turkish squadron was mostly destroyed or scattered and some vessels captured by the Greek.

Zea, 26 May. An extract from a private letter provided more details dealing with the latest events. When begin May the Turkish fleet passed the Dardanelles she sailed via Mitylene towards the island Sciathos with the order to attack and capture the island. On board was all the landing troops which could be find at least 7.000 men.
