French squadron embarking troops in the bay of Fishgyard according to the Dutch newspaper Groninger courant dated 14 March 1797

An item dated London 27 February reported that on last Saturday tidings were received that French troops landed in the evening of the 22nd in the bay of Fisegurard, Wales.(1) The troops embarked from a small squadron consisting of 2 frigates, 1 corvette and 1 lugger which left the 3rd Brest. After the lading left the ships the scene. The French troops numbering 1.400 men commanded by two Irishmen surrendered when they were confronted with British troops strengthened by local people and numbering more as 4.000 men. The newspaper asked herself what the French intentions were with a lading with such few troops of which 1.200 men were galley slaves [forçats].
