Turkish reaction on Egyptian uprising still unknown according to the Dutch newspaper Utrechtse courant dated 30 January 1799

An item dated Constantinople 18 December reported that still it was unknown how the Turkish Porte would react on the uprising at Cairo, Egypt. The only news was that on 22 October 18 ships consisting of 2 Russian frigates, two gun barges, 1 frigate, 1 corvette and 4 small Turkish vessels were added to the squadron commanded by the British officer Hood. The Turkish vice admiral Seïde Ali who became famous during the last war with Russia had been for a long time prisoner. He was in the mean time released and ordered with permission of the Capitan Pacha to command a recently in the Dardanelles built 80 gun ship of the line.
