An item reported that the whaler Onward captain
Allen which left on 2 June 1863 New Bedford towards the Off Shore ground and
from there to the Lower California Coast. During the 10 months consisted her
catch of 2.000 barrels oil and 30.000 lb bone. She arrived a day earlier
coming from Ochotsk loaded with 2.000 barrels oil and 30.000 lb bone, meaning
within 17 months a catch of 3.300 barrels. The catch had a value of 200.000 US
dollars.
