Russian coast defence ironclad/armoured battery Netron Menya 1863-1905


Laid down at the so-called galley island at St. Petersburg, Russia by the British shipbuilding company Mitchell according to a contract dated 19 March 1862 already on 19 November, launched on 11 June 1864, completed in 1865 and finally stricken in 1905. With as sister ships the Pervenetz and the Kreml. With a displacement of 3.277-3,400 tons and as dimensions 65,46  (between perpendiculars)-67,80 (over all) x 16,14 (waterline) x 4,63 (fore)-5,18 (aft) x 5,75 (hold) metres.. Her crew numbered 395 men, late reduced to 170-190 men. The wrought iron made armour consisted at the sides and conning tower 4” with the battery protected by 4,5”. The armour plates were manufactured by Brown&Co., Sheffield, England. The armament consisted originally of 16-8”/23cm guns later replaced by 6-8” guns, 9-6” guns, 4-4.2” guns, 4-3.4” guns and 5-1pd revolvers. The 1.140 hip engine was originally placed in the ship of the line Constantin and was manufactured in 1858 by Humphry, England but now renovated by Baird at St. Petersburg and allowed a speed of 8 knots.
