German warships SMS Gneisenau and Sophie visiting Nieuwdiep, Netherlands according to the Dutch newspaper Het nieuws van den dag dated 19 July 1892

An item reported that except for the large German steam warship Gneisenau (1) also the German steam corvette Sophie (2) was to arrived on short notice at Nieuwediep, Netherlands.

1. Screw steam corvette of the Bismarck-class, Laid down at the Kaiserliche Werft Danzig, Danzig in June 1877, launched on 4 September 1879, completed on 3 October 1880, grounded at the harbour mole and sunk during a gale off Malaga, Spain on 16 December 1900, with a displacement of 3.040 long tons/3.089 tons and an armament of 14-15cm/5.9” guns, 2-8,8cm/3.5” quick firing guns and 6-3,7cm/”1.5” 5-barrelled guns.
2. Flush deck corvette laid down in 1879 at the Imperial Dockyard at Danzig, launched on 10 November 1881, commissioned on 10 August 1882, cadet training ship 1892, barrack ship at Wilhelmshaven, Germany 21 May 1908, at Helgoland 1 August 1914, at Emden 1916, sold to the submarine administration, Berlin, Germany 7 July 1920 and finally broken up at Hamburg, Germany a year later.
