Officers of German SMS corvette Leipzig offended in Chile according to the Dutch newspaper Leeuwarder courant dated 3 November 1891

An item referred to the American newspaper New-York Herald which reported that according to tidings received from Valparaiso two German navy officers (1) the evening before were offended between Valparaiso, Chile and Santiago, Chile. It was claimed that was caused by the large number of refugees taken on board of the German warship Leipzig. The German admiral complained and the municipality promised to do anything to prevent that those offences would happen again.(2)

1. Flush-decked corvette, laid down at the shipyard of AG Vulkan, Stettin with yard number 72 in 1874, launched on 13 September 1875, commissioned on 1 June 1877, modified at the Imperial Dockyard at Wilhelmshaven, Germany between 1885-1888, stricken on 27 August 1894, converted into an engine hulk at Wilhelmshaven and finally sold to be broken up in the Netherlands on 7 June 1907.
2. After 1848 were Germans in huge numbers immigrated to Chile firstly in the area between Valdivia and Puerto Montt, South Chile later also around Temuco, Santiago. Between 16 January and 18 September 1891 was in Chile a civil war going on.
