US Navy ordered the building of 8 submarines by the Electric Boat Company according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad dated 12 July 1907
An item reported that in the USA tests were executed to compare a submarine built by the Lake Boat Company and the Octopus, the latter built by the Electric Boat Company.(1)) She was a enlarged model of the Dutch submarine Hr.Ms. O 1.(2) The Octopus performed so well that the US government ordered 8 submarines of her kind.

1. Launched at the Fore River Shipyard, Quincy, Massachusetts on 4 October 1906, commissioned on 30 June 1908, renamed C1 on 17 November 1911, decommissioned on 4 August 1919 and sold to be broken up on 13 April 1920. With a displacement of 238 long tons/242 tons (surfaced)-275 long tons/279 tons (submerged) and as dimensions 32,11 x 4,24 x 3,0 metres or 105.4 x 13.11 x 10 feet.
2. Laid down at the shipyard Kon. Mij. De Schelde, Vlissingen, Netherlands with yard number 116 as the Luctor et Emergo on 1 June 1904, launched on 8 July 1905, commissioned on 21 December 1906 and finally decommissioned in 1920 and except for the conning tower broken up. With a displacement of 105 (surfaced)-124 (submerged) tons and as dimensions 20,4 x 4,1 x 2,8 metres.
